First, the idea seems to come from one many may share: a genuine open world RPG set in the Bionicle universe. From there, it became part of putting it all together. Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui is inspired by Skyrim, Dark Souls, and more, but it had to begin somewhere. Luckily, CrainyCreation has had experience with this before. The dev first began by “working on the movements of the characters and the combat, though both of these things have seen countless iterations since then to the point where they are unrecognizable.”

In developing this game, CrainyCreation talked about what’s to be added, ideas that are still be mulled over, and more that it can do to bring the world of Mata Nui to life. For example, while it is first and foremost a single player game, it’ll have co-op functionality of up to 6 players. “It’s totally possible to be in a multiplayer session with 3 other people and never see them once,” CrainyCreation continued, making it seem like a solid system to support single-player and co-op fans. There’s also plans to add PvP, which will be a small addition and not a focus of the game, added simply because its easy with the systems at play.
One idea to branch from this is an “invasion-like mechanic,” similar to what it is seen Dark Souls, but it’s a tentative thing. Implementing it would likely be endgame content with an “if.” Working ideas into the game is something interesting and unique in all forms of development, including fan projects. With as impressive as the game already is, it’ll be interesting to see what CrainyCreation adds to it down the line. After all, CrainyCreation states that “there are a lot of under the hood systems already programmed” that just need some visual polish before being shown, such as the leveling and progression system.
CrainyCreation is not accepting funds for development, nor will it charge upon the release of Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui. It’s completely free, and this really just shows the power of beautiful fan projects like it and the Ocarina of Time remake. Of course, projects like these aren’t without concern, so we asked CrainyCreation how it deals with the possibility of being shut down. To which, CrainyCreation commented,
Since its reveal, this has been a worry by many fans of the project and reasonably so. It remains a small portion of worries, though, as it’s clear from its YouTube channel that fans have quickly grown attached to and clinged to this project, stating it looks like a game they’ve wanted since childhood, much like CrainyCreation. The Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui reveal trailer sits at nearly 200,000 views in one week, with an ovewhelming 15k like vs. a mere 62 dislikes. What this seems to show, from CrainyCreation’s mind to the eyes of fans, is the warming power of a passionate fan project.
