On top of coming along for the player’s journey looking all adorable and friendly, this little grasshopper also has a couple of functions that will make the player’s gameplay so much more layered and enjoyable. At the beginning of the game, however, it isn’t quite clear just how these upgrades are unlocked.
The Automaton Functions Before the player learns how to unlock every single Automaton upgrade, it is better for them to first learn what the upgrades exactly are. The Automaton has a total of five functions. Here they all are:
Flashlight - The flashlight function is the Automaton’s only pre-unlocked. This function will automatically activate when the player enters darker areas. It will also directly point at the direction the player is looking at. Health Injector - The Health Injector acts as a healing item. It will automatically activate when the player’s health drops low enough. Alternatively, it can also be manually activated by using the radial wheel. Glider - The glider function is one of the most exciting mechanics of the game. With this upgrade unlocked, the player can activate the glider when jumping from great heights to slowly glide through the air, allowing them to reach great distances. Turret - The Turret upgrade is the Automaton’s combat function. Once unlocked, the Automaton will automatically assist the player in combat. Boost - The Boost upgrade, once activated, will boost the player’s damage output. This function can be activated via the game’s radial wheel.
How To Unlock All Of The Automaton’s Upgrades
There is only one way to unlock the Automaton’s functions upgrade in the game, and that’s by competing Mirage quests. This is a series of side quests that spawn randomly anywhere in the world. However, for as long as the player explores the game’s map, there is a very high chance that the player will come across this quest.

Once the NPC that gives the side quest spawns within the player’s vicinity, the narrator will point the mysterious figure out. The encounter will have the player experience a flashback where they’re fighting another character. It doesn’t matter whether or not the player wins this fight. They will still unlock an Automaton upgrade. To unlock all Automaton upgrades, the player must simply do the Mirage quest a total of four times.
Changing The Automaton’s Appearance
The Automaton has one more form of upgrade that has nothing to do with function. This, rather, is mainly cosmetic. Including the default Automaton skin, there are a total of 11 skins the player can unlock in the game.

To unlock the other Automaton appearances, the player can turn to the noticeboards scattered all around the game’s world for Automaton Noticeboards quests.
