Released in 1989, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure followed the titular duo as they travel through time to meet historical figures in order to pass their history class. However, the cost of failure will also lead to their band, Wyld Stallyns, never forming and would consequently destroy the Utopian world of the future built around their music. The success of the film led to a sequel in 1991, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, and Reeves had previously stated that plans for a third film were being developed back in 2010. After years of working on the script, production on Bill and Ted Face the Music finally started in the summer of 2019.

Initially scheduled to be released in theaters on August 14, 2020, the coronavirus pandemic resulted in Bill and Ted Face the Music’s debut being postponed on multiple occasions before United Artists announced the film would receive a combined VOD and limited theatrical release in the U.S. on September 1, 2020. Now, Alex Winter (the Bill of Bill and Ted) has taken to his official Twitter account to announce the new August 28, 2020, U.S. release date and added that all international release dates will be revealed soon. The decision to move up Bill and Ted Face Music’s VOD and theatrical release up by a week gives the comedy film more distance from the debut of Mulan, which Disney recently announced will be available to Disney+ subscribers for an additional premium fee starting September 4, 2020.

Bill and Ted Face the Music will find the duo as middle-aged men, with daughters of their own, who realize they have failed to produce the music that was said to pave the way for the future’s Utopian society. However, Bill and Ted get a much needed creative boost when a visitor from the future warns them that they have only 78 minutes to create a song that will save the entire universe.

Bill and Ted Face the Music’s move provides a bit of breathing room in a crowded September. In addition to the aforementioned Disney+ debut of Mulan, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is scheduled to be released in select U.S. theaters starting on September 3.

Of course, suddenly having a lot of movies to watch all at once seems like a good problem to have these days. After months of watching highly-anticipated films being pushed back, it will be nice to have some new blockbusters to watch, even from the safety of our home.

Bill and Ted Face the Music will be released On Demand and in select theaters in the U.S. on August 28, 2018.
